Re: G3SKI Silent Key
I have much to thank Ron (& Fred Canning) for. They guided me through the valve era then conversion to transistors and the very first ICs.I still think of them each time I drive past the "Tech" on my way to hospital.R.I.P. RonChrisG4ZCS -
G3SKI Silent Key
Just received some sad news from Martin Bravery
Ron G3SKI died on Monday evening - very peaceful, just old age - 99 1/2 years - he always wanted to make 100
He was in a nursing home in Chichester receiving care for some time now
Ron was known by many of us who attended Brighton Technical College - he lectured there until about 1987
Great man and always had time for everyone especially his old students
Martin will let me know further details of the funeral service in due course

Radio Path Profile
Here is a very interesting and useful path profile, plotting tool - it is on a company website that sells Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi linking equipment plus other networkingJust click on the map set up the two points start and finish, and you will see the profile between themThis is the profile between G4UDU AND G6DGKJust a simple tool and obviously doesn't show you path loss in dB, but very useful in finding out what's in the way !Phil G4UDU -

Baluns and Traps
Hi All,
For those who were at the Talk by Phil G4UDU on the 9th August and any others that are interested.
I have picked up from Chris at RadioStuff (www.radio-stuff.com) my kit of parts to build my 9:1 balun with choke.
Chris is very helpful, full of useful tips and he is local too, Partridge Green.
There will be at least one Balun for Phil to check over on this Friday 23rd.
Regards
Alan

Baluns and UNUNs
Phil's talk reminded me that my 18m vertical with 30 radials and an MRF998RT auto-tuner was a bit clunky on some bands and went off on a permanent hunt on 10m.So I re-wound a current balun from the junk box to be a 4:1 UNUN. Then shoehorned it into a plastic box from Screwfix. Pic attached. I must buy a bigger box next time!Anyway, conclusion: the 4:1 transformation is enough to reduce down the extremes in impedances to make them matcheable. All bands achieve better than 1.1:1 in under a second. And 10m now behaves. Thanks for the nudge Phil.John GM8JBJJohn Berry

Re: Friday
Make it a 5/8 or a 3/4 wave on 10m with a coax trap - will be ignored on all other bandsPhil -
Re: Friday
I’ve 18m so about 59ft. Minus my chopping. With 30 ground radials. So I’m thinking: return it to 18m, add a 4:1 UNUN and then see.I still want it to work on 10 so it’s quite an ask. Tunes OK but needs to be coaxed sometimes. Your talk prompted me to think that I could improve it.JohnJohn BerryTimelessTime LtdTel: 07553 250 919Tel: 01450 372 274Sent from my Gmail Mobile. -
Re: Friday
As a straight length - 26 ft is good - that is the length of the Butternut HF6 and HF9 verticals -
Re: Friday
Thanks Phil.I’ve tried shortening it, but not electrically lengthening. Food for thought.John GM8JBJJohn BerryTimelessTime LtdTel: 07553 250 919Tel: 01450 372 274Sent from my Gmail Mobile. -
Re: Friday
If you can helically wind on 42ft of wire on your 1/4 40m antenna - assuming it is a fibreglass pole - that gives you a 1/4 wave on 60m and shifts away from any of the regular band resonances making it easier for an Auto ATU to functionI use this method when away with the MH - I lay out a couple of radials and it tunes with an LDG ATU from 80m through to 10 without any problemPhil G4UDU -
Re: Friday
Thanks Phil. It’s a balance I guess. Half wave on 40. Quarter on 80. Various on other bands. I’ve fiddled with the length and have a compromise for the MFJ998RT at its foot. But it’s still fickle.I’m thinking 2:1 or 4:1 UNUN will contribute without causing issues elsewhere. Your impedance-versus-frequency graph was very illustrative.73sJohn GM8JBJJohn BerryTimelessTime LtdTel: 07553 250 919Tel: 01450 372 274Sent from my Gmail Mobile. -
Re: Friday
You will usually find a 2:1 UNUN can helpShort ( less than a 1/4 wave ) verticals when resonant typically are around 25 Ohms or lessPhil
