On Friday last (9th Aug) we held our Treasure Hunt.
This was hosted by Alan and Stella, who decided to revive a format that had been used many years previously hence turning it into a Measure Hunt.
The idea being that even if you got back in the shortest time, and had answered all the questions correctly, collected all the random bits asked for along the way, you may still not be the winner of the Hunt.

We had five teams that took part - they were:-
1) Kim G7AIE & Sue G6YPY
2) Mike G8KMP, Tony G3XQM & Peter G4AKG
3) Russell G7TMR & Val XYL
4) Mike G1TDL & Sue XYL
5) Del 2E0KDL & family

Once each team had given the mileage reading to Alan prior to leaving Cyprus Hall carpark, it was then entirely up to each team, which way round they went, visiting the four locations marked on the maps, prior to meeting back at the finishing point (The Acorn) at the Premier Inn Burgess Hill, by Tesco's

We had set five questions in or around each location, plus there was one final one just as you came in through the doors of the pub from the carpark.

While Alan & Stella sorted the marking on the spreadsheet, all those that took part had a well deserved drink or two, some even shared some crisps and lovely they were too.

The team in 1st place was:-
Kim G7AIE & Sue G6YPY.
Followed by
Russell G7TMR & Val XYL,
Mike G8KMP, Tony GXQM & Peter G4AKG.
Del 2E0KDL & family.
Mike G1TDL & Sue XYL.
N.B.Sue and Kim won the treasure hunt by just one point from Russell and Val - Ed.

The 1st placed team won with 65 points and the 5th team came in with 45 points. Everyone appeared to have had a good time, although we thought maybe the next one could be on a Sunday morning ending at a pub for lunch. Perhaps you could send some feedback to the chairman letting him know if you would like to try this out? We used to do it many, many years ago, perhaps we could try this again.

History of Windmills Evening:
It all began when Eric Letts G3RXJ, Darrell Emmerson G3SYS and Brian Epps G3SHQ, all members of the Crawley Amateur Radio Society, felt that it was too far to travel on winter nights, and that the possibility of a local Club was worth exploring.
Darrell and Brian were youngsters, both still studying, but full of enthusiasm. Between them they searched the Call Book for call signs in the Burgess Hill, Hasocks and Haywards Heath areas, and came up with quite a surprising number, including Griff Rockwood G3JGR and Arthur Cambell G3PEQ.

Eric Letts G3RXJ undertook to write to all those people to ascertain interest, and was amazed at the response. On the 15th June, 18 People met at Arthur Cambell's G3PEQ home is Hassocks for the Inaugural meeting. It was a unanimous decision to form a club, and they settled for the name of "Mid-Sussex Amateur Radio Society". A Committee was formed consisting of Chairman - Maurice Brown G3BZO, Secretary - Eric Letts G3RXJ and Treasurer - P Tory, together with 4 committee members.

Windmills Evening Friday 21st June 2019
Around twelve members and friends enjoyed the sunny evening up at the Windmills. Kim G7AIE and Phil G4UDU were operating from their vehicles.

A very interesting talk given by John G8JBJ on HF Propagation that was not only heard by the members in Millfield Suite, but also simultaneously by our overseas members.
GoToMeeting allowed MSARS members located in Italy and Jersey to join in, hear the proceedings and ask questions.
The presentation containing the link to the propagation prediction tool that John demonstrated and the source of Smooth Sunspot Numbers is available on Youtube. A link to it is provided under our Videos menu.

Who could have imagined when Eric Letts, G3RXJ moved down from Crawley in 1966, bought a house almost opposite mine in Meadow Lane, and decided that Burgess Hill needed a local Amateur Radio Club, that we’d still be here 50 years later going from strength to strength.
Eric trawled through the RSGB membership list and extracted a list of local amateurs, wrote them a letter and invited them to an inaugural meeting at Arthur Campbell, G3PEQ’s house in Hassocks and we were off!
It wasn’t easy to get the Club going, we needed to find a meeting place since we already had more members than would fit into anyone’s front room. We looked around and our first HQ was a room in a Lindfield school just along the road from Eric Holloway, G3HUA’s house.
We then found rooms in Marle Place Burgess Hill where in due course we were able to install a Versatower 65 foot mast, and long wire antennas in the large grounds of the Community Centre.
Later we moved to our present QTH at Cyprus Hall, but with the development going on around us, I wonder sometimes where we’ll find ourselves in the future.
We’ve seen the introduction of the transistor and IC’s, the coming of SSB in favour of AM and lately the introduction of software defined radios coupling computers to real radios and who knows what is to come?
We’ve run training courses for many years introducing all ages to Amateur Radio and are involved with many outside events which give well needed publicity to our activities.
We have won many operating awards for both HF and VHF and should be proud of these talking about and displaying them whenever possible.
There are however a few of those original members who gathered in Arthur’s front room still around, and we like to think that we can still contribute something to today’s amateur activities. After all, the basic laws of physics have not changed and it is easy for some newer members to lose sight of this!
Now, in our 50th year MSARS finds itself in a very different world of Amateur Radio, communicating by perhaps different modes but still with the aim of talking to other amateurs joined together by our common interest.
Remember, and I have said this before, all of us can enjoy many different aspects of our hobby, but MSARS IS A RADIO CLUB and I am proud and delighted to be your President.
73, Ken Gibson G3WYN - President of The Mid Sussex Amateur Radio Society
